Aids for hearing loss in one ear

by Jason on October 6, 2010

We shoot to tackle all issues around hearing aids and hearing loss on this blog. One topic that I have yet to write about is the situation when an individual has severe hearing loss in one ear and not the other. It is easy to imagine the many circumstances that could cause an individual to lose hearing quality on one side while retaining perfect hearing on the other.

Tandem is a new cross/bicross hearing instrument that transfers the sound from the ear which does not hear well and delivers it to to the ear that does. This is a fascinating approach and makes me wonder how well it works. Does this not throw someone’s perception off? Wouldn’t you always think things that you heard were occuring on the side of the good ear? Maybe the brain has a way to tell the difference?

So should someone in this situation get a hearing aid built for someone with loss on both sides? This actually does not seem to be the standard logic, at least not for a company that just built a hearing aid that they are calling Tandem.

If anyone has experience with technologies that have been developed to aid in situations where people have lost the hearing in one ear please let us know if they work well and any problems to look for.
